1922–23 Stoke F.C. season
The 1922–23 season was Stoke's 30th season of league football and the 19th in the First Division.
Overview
With the club's aims for promotion achieved Stoke were back in the First Division for the first time since 1907. There was a more optimism in the for the 1922–23 season, but things started to go wrong quickly. In the opening eight games Stoke managed just two draws an found themselves at the bottom of the table. Stoke's first win of the season came against Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion. The board and director's tried desperately to ensure survival with a number of signings. But despite the new players relegation was the final outcome of the season. Crowds reached an all time high at the Victoria Ground with 44,000 at the match against Sunderland in December.
In the FA Cup Stoke beat Blyth Spartans 3–0 in the first round before being knocked out 3–1 to Bury.
Arthur Shallcross resigned in march 1923 and former Newcastle United and England winger Jock Rutherford took over in April 1923. However after a heated row with the directors he quickly left after just four weeks in charge.
